The first arabica coffee tree in Burundi was introduced by the Belgians in the early 1930s and has been growing in the country ever since.

Botanical species

Burundi grows two types of coffee. Arabica is the most important representing 98 % of the national output. Robusta , which represents 2% of the total production is found in the plains of the Imbo region overhanging the Lake Tanganyika , the second deepest in the world after Baïkal .
With regard to varieties grown, Bourbon has a higher proportion than Jackson and Mibirizi.
