The first arabica coffee tree in Burundi was introduced by the Belgians in the early 1930s and has been growing in the country ever since.

OCIBU is coordinating the promotional activities through regulary participation in coffee shows, fairs, conferences and exhibitions organized around the world.

Burundi coffee has emerged thanks to its inherent quality as one of the best arabicas coffee of the Eastern region of Africa, and also among the best mild arabicas all over the world
Some testimonies so far registered are as follows : Burundi coffee ranked first during the first EAFCA African Fina Coffee conference and exhibition , and cupping competition held , in Naïrobi, Kenya in august 2002
Ranked also first at the first coffee international saloom held in paris, France, december 2002
Ranked second at the international show and exhibition , at Hanover at Expo 2000 ,in Germany in June 2000
Burundi coffee labelled “NGOMA Mild” is classified among the best quality throughout the world. During the event, one of the expert ‘ panel conducted by the Speciality Coffee Association of America (SCAA); the results of the cup tasting of the Ngoma mild were indeed very impressive
Following these performances , Burundi’s coffee was stated in their final draft on the gourmet project sponsorised by ITC, the UNCTAD and the CFC as follows: Burundi is an incredible success story. In one year time span Burundi Ngoma Mild went from totally unknown to being a featured coffee on a US speciality roaster ‘s stand at the world permiere speciality coffee exhibition.
